Utah Soda Shops: Your Guide to the Dirty Soda Capital
From Swig’s St. George beginnings to today’s drive-through culture: why Utah became the undisputed capital of the dirty soda shop.
Utah is often called the dirty soda capital of America. The reason is simple: a large share of Utah residents do not drink alcohol or coffee, so creative non-alcoholic drinks became the social drink of choice.
In 2010, a small drive-through called Swig opened in St. George and turned mixed sodas into a full-blown culture. Today, Utah is still the capital of the dirty soda shop.
This guide covers why Utah became the soda shop capital, the story of Swig (the shop that started it all), the other big Utah chains, and what to expect on your first visit.

Why Does Utah Have So Many Soda Shops?
Surveys estimate that between 42% and 50% of Utah residents identify as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose health code discourages alcohol, tea, and coffee. Soda, on the other hand, is perfectly fine.
That created an ideal market for fun, customized non-alcoholic drinks.
Soda shops became Utah’s answer to the coffee shop: a place to meet friends, grab an afternoon pick-me-up, and try something new. The afternoon “soda run” is a genuine Utah tradition.
Soda shops give Utahns their own version of the coffee ritual, with drive-through lines that can rival the rush outside a Starbucks.
Swig: The Shop That Started It All
Swig opened in April 2010 in St. George, Utah, founded by Nicole Tanner and Todd Tanner. The first shop was a small space near Utah Tech University selling customized fountain drinks.
The concept caught on fast.
Swig trademarked the term “dirty soda” in 2013. By 2016 the chain had 16 locations.
Savory Fund took majority ownership in 2018, and the Larry H. Miller Company bought a majority stake in 2022. Today Swig lists more than 170 locations across 17 states, and Utah, where it started, still has the most.

Other Popular Soda Shops in Utah
Swig may have started the trend, but Utah’s soda scene is bigger than one brand. These are the other names you will see across the state:
- Sodalicious: One of Swig’s earliest competitors, known for playful drink names that wink at Utah culture.
- Fiiz Drinks: Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Bountiful, Utah. Built around extreme customization with a “Your Drink. Your Way” philosophy.
- Thirst Drinks: Founded in 2016 in Salt Lake City. Known for custom sodas paired with made-from-scratch food like pretzel bites and beignets.
- Twisted Sugar: Utah-born chain pairing dirty sodas with fresh-baked cookies.
- Quench It!: Family-owned chain headquartered in Heber City, with stores across Utah.
Each shop has its own personality, but they all share the same formula: fountain soda plus syrups, purees, and cream, served fast through a drive-through.
What Exactly Is a Dirty Soda?
A dirty soda is a fountain soda such as Coke, Dr Pepper, Sprite, or Mountain Dew mixed with add-ins like flavored syrups, fruit purees, and cream or half-and-half.
The original is said to have been a Diet Coke with coconut syrup, lime, and half-and-half.
Swig’s own FAQ names the Texas Tab, Strawberry Breeze, and Shark Attack among its most popular drinks. See all the options on our Dirty Sodas menu page.

Utah Soda Shops FAQs

Swig, which calls itself the home of the original dirty soda, opened in April 2010 in St. George, Utah. Founder Nicole Tanner is widely credited with turning the dirty soda from a homemade mix into a drive-through business.
Why are soda shops so popular in Utah?
Utah’s large Latter-day Saint population abstains from alcohol and coffee, which created strong demand for creative non-alcoholic drinks. Soda shops filled the social role that coffee shops play elsewhere.
